Dryer Vent Service

Dryer Vent Rerouting in Boise, Fixed Right the First Time

When the duct path is the problem - plastic flex duct, too many bends, an oversized run - cleaning is a temporary fix. Rerouting corrects the installation so the dryer can exhaust the way it was designed to.

The Rerouting Process

Fix the Path.
Not Just the Lint.

Inspect the Existing Path

We trace the full run, identify the problem: plastic flex duct, oversized run length, excess bends, wrong termination location, or some combination. We calculate the equivalent length against the IMC 25-foot maximum and write down what the correct path would look like and what it would take to build it.

Build the Corrected Run

We install rigid aluminum duct with swept elbows at every turn - swept elbows add less equivalent length than standard 90-degree fittings and catch less lint. Where the run connects to the dryer we use approved flexible aluminum foil transition duct, not plastic. The new cap is installed at the corrected termination point.

Test and Confirm

We run the dryer with the new installation, confirm airflow at the exterior cap, and check every joint for exhaust leaks. If you add a cleaning to the same visit, the new duct path is cleaned before first use. You get a written description of what was changed and the before-and-after equivalent length calculation.

Why the Material Matters

Plastic Flex Duct
Is Not a Gray Area.

Valley Vent Co. technician on a step-ladder installing an aluminum dryer vent termination cap into an exterior wall

Plastic flex duct melts under dryer exhaust heat when the duct is restricted. The ribbed interior collects lint at every corrugation, which means restriction happens faster than it does in rigid duct. The IMC prohibits plastic flex duct for dryer exhaust for both reasons. When we find it, the conversation is not whether to replace it - it is how to route the replacement correctly.

Correct rigid metal installation uses smooth-wall aluminum duct, 4-inch diameter, with swept elbows at turns. Joints are secured with sheet-metal screws and metal foil tape - not duct tape, which deteriorates under heat and vibration. The transition from the dryer to the wall is a short section of approved flexible aluminum foil duct, not a single piece that runs the length of the installation.

What is a dryer vent reroute?

A reroute changes the path the exhaust duct takes from the dryer to the exterior. This is done when the existing path is too long, has too many bends, uses the wrong duct material, or exits in a location that creates problems - too close to a window, under a soffit, or up through the roof when a side-wall exit is more practical. Rerouting may involve cutting new penetrations in walls or ceilings, installing rigid metal duct, and fitting a new exterior cap.

Why is plastic flex duct dangerous in a dryer vent?

Plastic and vinyl flex duct is not rated for the heat that a dryer produces. Under sustained high heat - which happens whenever the duct is partially restricted - plastic flex duct softens, sags, and can melt. The ribbed interior also catches lint in its corrugations far faster than smooth-wall duct. Both the International Mechanical Code and the fire safety community flag plastic dryer duct as a hazard. We replace it with rigid aluminum duct or approved flexible aluminum foil transition duct.

How much does dryer vent rerouting cost?

Rerouting starts at $225. The final price depends on the complexity: how far the new path has to run, whether walls or ceilings need to be opened, and how many penetrations the installation requires. We give you a written quote after the inspection before any work starts. If you combine rerouting with cleaning on the same visit, we can often handle both in a single trip.

Can you reroute a dryer vent that currently exits through the roof?

Yes. Rooftop exits are code-permitted but create specific problems in Idaho's climate: caps ice over in winter, cap flaps freeze open, and lint accumulates faster in the upward run. We can reroute to a side-wall exit below the roofline in most cases, which shortens the run, eliminates the freeze risk, and makes the cap accessible for future inspection without roof access.
