Every chimney sweep at Valley Vent Co. is trained to CSIA standards. That means working knowledge of flue systems, NFPA 211 safety codes, and chimney construction before they go near a firebox. We do not subcontract.
Level 2 camera inspections are built into the same visit when warranted. Creosote stage, mortar condition, liner integrity - you get a written report, not a verbal summary in the driveway.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 211) recommends annual cleaning and inspection for any chimney that is in use. If you burn wood regularly, once a year before heating season is the standard. Occasional-use chimneys still need an inspection every year because animals, moisture, and mortar deterioration do not wait for heavy use.
Creosote is a tar-like byproduct of wood combustion that coats the inside of your flue. It is highly flammable. First-degree creosote is flaky and easy to brush out. Second-degree is a harder, flaky crust. Third-degree creosote is a dense, glazed coating that requires chemical treatment or power tools to remove. Third-degree creosote is the primary cause of chimney fires.
No law requires CSIA certification to work on chimneys in Idaho, but it matters for quality and liability. CSIA (Chimney Safety Institute of America) certification means the technician has passed a written exam on chimney systems, safety codes, and installation standards. Valley Vent Co. technicians are trained to CSIA standards.
A Level 1 inspection (the most common) covers the accessible portions of the chimney interior and exterior, the fireplace opening, and the visible flue. The technician checks for obstructions, creosote buildup, cracked tiles, damaged mortar, and proper clearances. Level 2 adds a video camera inspection of the entire flue - required for real estate transactions and after a chimney fire.
Yes. Valley Vent Co. services gas fireplaces - cleaning, inspection, and repair. Boise Chimney Co. carries a public notice on their site that they do not service gas fireplaces. We do. An annual gas fireplace inspection covers the burner, pilot, thermocouple, igniter, and flue connection.
Our standard chimney sweep with Level 1 inspection is $249. That is a fixed price - sweep and inspection are combined because we do not clean a flue without checking it first. A Level 2 camera inspection is $349. Gas fireplace service starts at $199. All prices are published on our pricing page.
